The Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate (CNR-ISAC) aims at an integrated scientific understanding of the atmosphere, the ocean and their processes, by means of a multidisciplinary approach which combines scientific and technological skills in meteorology, climate, atmospheric dynamics and composition, Earth observations; it develops basic research, theoretical, experimental and numerical, and modeling work together with impact evaluation.
ISAC is the largest CNR Institute on atmospheric sciences, structured in 7 Units over the country, 7 permanent observatories, including 3 Global Stations of the Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) program of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and 2 atmospheric research Supersites.
ISAC is recognised internationally through its collaboration with a large number of European laboratories, and research centers worldwide.

The University of Milan and the National Research Council have analyzed for the first time the horizontal visibility of the atmosphere, discovering that, in the most polluted areas of the country, the frequency of days with visibility above 10 or 20 km is more than doubled in the last 40 years, thanks to the regulations implemented to reduce pollution. The recent tornado that affected Fiumicino and Focene in the early hours of Sunday, July 28th and which unfortunately caused one casualty, recalled the public attention on these events.
Violent tornadoes have affected Italy in the past too but the general feeling is that the frequency of these events is increasing.

I ricercatori CNR-ISAC, coordinati dal Dr. Giampaolo Gobbi ed in collaborazione con ARPA Valle d'Aosta, hanno rilevato le micro polveri emesse e depositate al suolo in seguito all'eruzione del vulcao Stromboli del 3 luglio 2019 contribuendo alla definizione dell'impatto dell'evento.

StratoClim EU project filed campaign

The Nature Geoscience journal has recently published an article (see link below) which deonstrate the presence of ammonium nitrate particles in the upper troposphere and allowed to trace the source of ammonia at the origin of the formation of particles.

A CNR-ISAC researcher, Dr. Francesco Cairo was among the international group of scientists that took part to the esxperimental research.

In risposta a recenti fuorvianti affermazioni che intendono negare l'influenza umana sui cambiamenti climatici (*), piu' di duecento scienziati italiani che svolgono correntemente ricerca sul clima hanno firmato una lettera aperta che ribadisce l'origine antropica del riscaldamento globale in corso, secondo i piu' recenti risultati della ricerca, condivisi dalla stragrande maggioranza della comunita' scientifica internazionale, e invitano a perseguire politiche di mitigazione e adattamento.
