1st Meeting on Mediterranean Cyclones and Aerosol

Date

In the framework of the activity of the COST action CA19109 -MEDCYCLONES “European network for Mediterranean cyclones in weather and climate, we are glad to announce the organization of the 1st Meeting on Mediterranean Cyclones and Aerosol. The meeting will be held at Hotel Orsa Maggiore (http://www.orsamaggiore.it/) in Castro Marina, close to Lecce, in south-eastern Italy, from 20 to 23 September 2021.

The meeting would provide the opportunity for a comprehensive discussion about intense Mediterranean cyclones and their role in transporting Saharan dust towards the Mediterranean region, as well as about the influence of aerosol on cyclone development.

The meeting aims at bringing together experts from the modelling community (atmospheric, oceanic, and aerosol) and from the experimental community (in situ and remote sensing aerosol measurements) in order to allow a complementary vision of the transport of aerosol due to Mediterranean cyclones, and to discuss and propose research approaches as foreseen within the WG3 of the COST action. In particular, the possibility of a joint methodology that combines a model-based strategy with data analysis (from field experiments, satellite retrievals and meteorological reanalysis) will be explored in order to advance toward coupled ocean-atmosphere-aerosol modeling systems for a better representation of severe storms in the Mediterranean basin.

The first part of the meeting will be dedicated to review the current knowledge of high-impact Mediterranean cyclones, in particular those with tropical-like characteristics (Medicanes), with the purpose of advancing in their exact definition, exploiting different approaches. The second part of the meeting will be devoted to assess the interplay between Mediterranean cyclones and aerosol: on the one hand, the role of Saharan dust in modulating the intensity of Mediterranean cyclones, and on the other hand, the role of cyclones in mobilizing Saharan dust. Participation will be limited to 20 persons at most, due to safety reasons and venue capacity, seeking a distribution of expertise over different disciplines and approaches. If you wish to attend the meeting,or for any information, please send an email by 30 June 2021 to: MMCA_2021 [at] isac.cnr.it">MMCA_2021 [at] isac.cnr.it
