Intensive Course on LCA and Sustainability in Restoration Sites

Date

Course introduction

The preservation of cultural heritage can no longer be separated from environmental sustainability. Every intervention – from the choice of materials to construction techniques – has an impact: energy, environmental and social. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is the scientific methodology that allows these impacts to be measured and optimised throughout the entire life cycle of an intervention. In sectors such as construction and industry, it is already a reality. In restoration, it is a revolution yet to be built.

This intensive course, organised by YOCOCU A.P.S., CNR-ISAC, Fondazione Ecosistemi, Museo Nazionale Etrusco, Lab4green and ICOM Lazio, was created to fill that gap. It is a unique training opportunity in Italy, conceived for restorers, public managers, professionals and cultural workers. Two days of applied theory, workshops, case studies and simulated work sites, to look at materials, processes and operational solutions with a new perspective, and to recognise latent environmental issues in traditional methods in order to move towards sustainable alternatives.

Course goals

The purpose is to promote a broad and accessible understanding of the key concepts of sustainability, transforming environmental culture into a shared experience. The course aims to:
a) foster a new generation of knowledgeable restorers and professionals
b) strengthen the capacity of public institutions to adopt environmental criteria in their decisions
c) bring the local community closer to issues of sustainability applied to heritage.
