description

The aim of this project is to tackle the challenges associated with the aerosol and trace gases estimates from passive sun-lunar-photometers and spectrometers night-time measurements. The proposed activity would be split into two phases, each lasting 12 months.
During Phase #1, the instrumental setup would be completed, tested and made operational, in terms of data acquisition and processing using the most suitable (available) retrieval schemes.
In this phase, the data analysis would bring suggestions for a) improvements in the measurement strategy (operation mode of the instruments) and for b) what concern the “lunar” retrieval algorithms.
During Phase #2, the outcomes gained during Phase #1 would be used to optimise the measurement strategy and to pre-operationally produce and distribute lunar products to the scientific community. Further investigations will be carried out during this phase. In particular, lunar albedo correction is an important aspect to be deeply investigated, especially for what concerns AOD retrievals. As for trace gases, the assumption that the closure polynomials in the DOAS fit is sufficient for this purpose will be verified.
