2022NPKCLX_PE10_PRIN2022 - Thunderstorm outflows measurement and modeling for strong–WIND nowcast and RISK mitigation (–WIND RISK)

acronym
2022NPKCLX_PE10_PRIN2022-WIND RISK
description

The present proposal aims at studying the 3D dynamics of thunderstorm clouds with emphasis on the mechanisms that determine the formation of strong outflows (i.e., downbursts and gust fronts) at the ground. Two experimental campaigns are planned in the Gulf of Genoa, an area that is occasionally affected by severe wind episodes responsible for severe damages to infrastructures (port, railways, …).
According to this aim, the main outcomes will be:
1. Definition of a procedure to nowcast strong thunderstorm outflows for operational purposes based on remote-sensing techniques.
2. Identification of recurrent patterns (if any) within thunderstorm clouds and in the pre-convective environment conducive to strong and damaging surface winds.
