A fire at a waste depot broke out on 5 May 2017 in Pomezia, 50 km south of Rome in Italy, burning for two days. It was detected from space by the Copernicus Sentinel-3A and ESA’s Proba-V satellites, (http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Observing_the_Earth/Pandora_measures_fire_fumes_over_Rome) and at ground level by two Pandora spectrometers, one positioned at the ISAC- CNR, in the Reasearch Area of Torvergata, a semi-rural location and the other at La Sapienza University’s Department of Physics near the centre of Rome. They are both part of a suite of atmospheric remote-sensing instruments – the Boundary layer Air Quality-analysis Using Networks of Instruments (BAQUNIN) – which is funded by ESA for atmospheric composition calibration and validation.
