Hail Climatology in the Mediterranean Basin Using the GPM Constellation (1999–2021)

Graphical Abstract

This work exploits the MicroWave Cloud Classification-Hail (MWCC-H) method proposed by Laviola et al. (2020) to characterise the occurrences of 22-yr hail events in the Mediterranean basin. Using a dataset based on the Global Precipitation Measurement mission constellation (GPM-C) the hail events occurred from the 1999 to 2021 have been identified. The analysed hail events were collected into two different severity categories: intense hail events (large Hail, H), characterised by hailstone diameters in the range 2-10 cm; extreme hail events (Super Hail, SH) where hailstones reach diameters greater than 10 cm. Our results allowed to identify the most vulnerable Mediterranean areas to the hailstreaks (sub hot-spot) and calculate a positive trend of hail events of 30% during the 2010-2021 with respect to the first decade (1999-2010).
