WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) is a state-of-the-art mesoscale numerical weather prediction system, provided by National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), with the largest worldwide community of registered users. The model is adopted at ISAC–CNR for both meteorological research and operational numerical weather prediction at different spatial resolutions (from synoptic to sub-kilometer scale). A number of WRF-related systems are also available for a wide range of applications: Data Assimilation System (WRFDA); atmospheric chemistry model (WRF-Chem); hydrological modeling system (WRF-Hydro)

RAMS@ISAC is a non-hydrostatic limited-area model, based on the RAMS (Regional Atmospheric Modeling System) version 6.0, with the addition of some main features: a) the implementation of additional single-moment microphysical schemes; b) the implementation of a module for lightning occurrence forecast; c) the implementation of a module assimilating lightning by nudging; d) the implementation of a 3D-Var data assimilation system (lighting, RADAR, GPS-ZTD).
