The recent tornado that affected Fiumicino and Focene in the early hours of Sunday, July 28th and which unfortunately caused one casualty, recalled the public attention on these events.
Violent tornadoes have affected Italy in the past too but the general feeling is that the frequency of these events is increasing.
Mario Marcello Miglietta, ISAC-CNR researcher, in the TG1 interview aired at 8 pm on 29 July, explained how the available data are not sufficient to draw conclusions on the effect of climate change on their frequency. However, an increase in their intensity is presumable, due to the greater energy involved following global warming.
