The interview "Tools to protect cultural heritage" with Alessandra Bonazza from CNR-ISAC has been published on the latest issue of EU Research magazine, discussing the ongoing activities of the INACO project.
The project - INnovative strategies for the Adoption of risk management plans to enhance the resilience of sensitive Cultural and natural heritage Objectives against - is coordinated by CNR-ISAC and is funded by the Interreg Central Europe Programme.
Among its goals, INACO aims at improving the resilience of the Central European regions in facing climate change impacts on environmental, cultural, socio-economic and human assets, by developing measures, information tools and risk management plans, also through the direct involvement of citizens.
The project activities focus on a number of pilots studies conducted at different sites particularly vulnerable to the impact of extreme weather events, such as around river basins - including the Po Delta.
In the interview, Alessandra Bonazza explains how essential it is to identify risks and forecast extreme weather events before they occur to prevent damage to cultural heritage sites.
Building on previous CNR-ISAC projects, the project is developing an open access web GIS platform to support local people by providing detailed and relevant information about local weather patterns. For the platform development, researchers are using outputs from both climate models and Earth observation datasets, including the atmospheric monitoring Copernicus service.
