About us
Mission
The Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate (CNR-ISAC) studies the interactions between the atmosphere, oceans, biosphere, and human activities. Through a multidisciplinary approach, it integrates scientific and technological expertise across the following research areas:
- Extreme weather and climate events – Characterization, predictability, and changes in the hydrological cycle in the Mediterranean region and at the global scale
- Meteorological and climate modelling – Analysis of the evolution of the Earth System through numerical modelling at varying levels of complexity and spatial-temporal resolution
- Atmospheric and climate observations – Development and integration of multi-platform observational techniques (ground-based, satellite, and mobile platforms), supported by permanent observatories in climate and environmental hotspots
- Aerosols and trace gases – Investigation of their properties and interactions with the Earth System through observations and multiscale modelling
- Impacts of climate variability and pollution – Assessment of their effects on natural and cultural heritage, as well as on planetary health, following the “One Health” approach
- Support for environmental policies – Development of products and services aimed at safeguarding air quality, enhancing climate change adaptation, and environmental risk mitigation
CNR-ISAC is the leading institute of the Italian National Research Council in the field of Atmospheric Sciences. It is organized into seven territorial units and seven permanent observatories, including one Global Station and three Regional Stations within the World Meteorological Organization Global Atmosphere Watch Programme, as well as two atmospheric supersites.
CNR-ISAC is internationally recognized through its collaborations with numerous European laboratories and leading research centres worldwide.
