Assessment of the Ocean Heat Content in CMIP6 climate simulations.

Greenhouse-gas emissions have created a planetary energy imbalance that is primarily manifested by increasing ocean heat content (OHC). Numerical models, in particular from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project, phase 5 (CMIP5, https://www.wcrp-climate.org/wgcm-cmip/wgcm-cmip5) have shown a large spread in OHC changes. The 6th phase of CMIP (https://www.wcrp-climate.org/wgcm-cmip/wgcm-cmip6) is currently concluding and more models respect to the previous phase are participating. Besides, the next report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC, https://www.ipcc.ch/) will be based on the analysis of CMIP6 runs.

We propose to assess the CMIP6 models with regard to the ocean heat content, comparing the simulated capability of the ocean to store heat globally and regionally.
