Short Bio

I graduated in Physics at Sapienza University of Rome, Italy and she earned her Ph.D. degree in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA through the NASA Earth System Science Fellowship Program. Here she could deepen her knowledge in satellite meteorology, atmospheric dynamics, cloud microphysics, numerical weather prediction modeling, and data assimilation. I have 30-year experience in remote sensing of clouds and precipitation, and I am leading expert in passive microwave radiometry, precipitation retrieval from space, and in the development of EO techniques for extreme weather monitoring and characterisation. I leads and manage CNR-ISAC participation in several projects and international collaborations. I am member of the NASA Precipitation Measurement Mission (PMM) Science Team since 2014, co-chair of the CGMS International Precipitation Working Group, member of the ESA consultation group European Scientists on Spectrum for Earth Observation (ESSEO), and member of the Science Advisory Group of the EUMETSAT Polar Satellite-Second Generation (EPS-SG) MWI/ICI Mission.

Research interests

My research interests include remote sensing of clouds and precipitation; passive microwave precipitation retrieval algorithms also based on machine learning; radiative transfer through precipitating clouds; microphysics characterisation of precipitating clouds using models and observations; development of microphysics schemes; cloud electrification; nowcasting techniques; combined EO and modeling techniques for the analysis of heavy precipitation systems. My current research interests span across satellite-based global precipitation monitoring and estimation, machine learning techniques in Earth Observation (EO) science, development of EO techniques for extreme weather monitoring and characterization, data assimilation and lightning physics, and studies on future meteorological satellite missions.
