31.08.2026 - Summer schools
3rd International School on Satellite Meteorology – ISSM 2026
ISSM 2026 main topics – Remote sensing theory and retrieval methods, impact of extremes on the cultural heritage, sensor technologies of small satellites, new challenging satellite missions
ISSM aims to train the next generation of scientists and operational meteorologists to consider remote measurements from space as a key point to better understand and model meteorological phenomena. The initiative is open to Ph.D. students and postdoctoral fellows in physical, environmental, atmospheric, or related sciences, and early career operational meteorologists and researchers.
ISSM 2026 main topics
- Remote sensing theory and satellite retrieval methods
- The physics of ice hydrometeors
- Severe storms in the Mediterranean explored from MTG, EarthCare and GPM-C
- Impact of meteo extremes on the cultural and natural heritage (CNH)
- Sensor technologies of small satellites (CubeSat)
- A special focus on the challenging ESA missions WIVERN and CAIRT
OPENING LECTURE: Atmospheric water cycle: evolution, changing and amplification through observational methods.
LABS:
• Sensitivity of the upwelling atmospheric spectral radiance to climate change signatures.
• MW radiative transfer simulation of hail clouds.
• Working with the risk mapping tool for Cultural Heritage Protection (CHP).
EXTRA LAB – Capture your perfect storm
a short course on practical photography and video making conceived to handle the main techniques to capture by lens the wonder of severe storms and lightning fugacity.
ISSM EXPERIENCE – Moving into the myth
The registration fee also includes the ISSM Experience, a boat trip around the Aeolian Islands with a stop on the island of Vulcano where you will climb to the top of the Great Crater to admire the craters and the the beautiful panorama of the archipelago offered by the sunset lights.
