Research Activity

The research activity of the Historical Climatology Group focuses on analysing climate variability and change through instrumental reconstruction of regional climate.
The aim of the Historical Climatology Group is to improve scientific understanding in the following topics
- To establish firmer knowledge of the history of climate in the recent past by setting up quality checked and homogenized databases.
- To monitor and report on current climatic developments on a national scale.
- To create regional gridded climate databases at the adequate spatial ant temporal resolution.
- To identify the processes (natural and man-made) at work in climatic fluctuations and the characteristic timescales of their evolution.
- To assess the evolution of climate extremes.
It has produced several quality controlled and homogenised climate databases, which have been used in studying long-term change over Italy for many climate variables (temperature, precipitation, sea level pressure, cloud cover, relative humidity).
