In the last decade the scientific community has become increasingly aware of the fact that the real climate signal in original series of meteorological data generally lies hidden behind non-climatic noise caused by station relocation, changes in instruments and instrument screens, changes in observation times, observers, and observing routines, algorithms for the calculation of means, and so on. So at present time the statement that time series of meteorological data cannot be used for climate research without a clear knowledge about the state of the data in terms of homogeneity has a very large consent.
There are different ways for solving homogeneity problems, and the choice of the most suitable one not only depends on the data-set characteristics (metadata availability, station density, and so on), but is also influenced by the homogenisation "philosophy" adopted by the research group that performs homogenisation. Within this context, in the frame of the activities to be performed within the INTERREG IIIB Alpine Space Project FORALPS, ISAC-CNR has organised a training session aiming to explain its approach toward the use of homogenisation methods for the analysis of time series of meteorological data. Homogeneity tests, methods, limits and benefits of homogenizing meteorological records will be discussed, and a demonstration of the homogenisation of real time series will be given. The training session is also addressed to absolute beginners. The training session will be held Tuesday 17th to Wednesday 18th May 2005 at the Istituto di Scienze dell'Atmosfera e del Clima (ISAC, Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Sciences) of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR, National Council for Research) in Bologna, Italy. The teachers will be Maurizio Maugeri (Milan University) and Michele Brunetti (ISAC CNR). There are 25 places available on the training session: the deadline for applications is Friday 29th April 2005. No fee is required. If you are interested in joining this event, you may apply by filling in the application form. |

Where are we in Bologna
How to reach us
From Station: From the central station "Bologna Centrale" either get a taxi right out of the station (fare around 5 euros) or bus number 87 (see bus time table).
First get the bus ticket from the bus company office (ATC) located on your right in the station building (you can get them from newsstands too). Cross the square in front of the station and then turn left (see the map).
The bus stop is located right in front of the bus station (Autostazione) at the beginning of via Indipendenza.
The bus stops at the front gate of the "CNR Area della Ricerca".
If you like you can reach the "CNR Area della Ricerca" within 30 minutes on foot! (see the map).
By car (see the map):
- From Milano or Firenze From the "Autostrada del Sole A1" exit at "Bologna Borgo Panigale".
Take the outer ring "Tangenziale" and go out at the Exit No. 5 "Uscita Lame". Turn left and proceed down "via Marco Polo" following the white arrow sign "CNR Area della Ricerca".
After the second traffic light you find a rotatory and must turn left down "via Yuri Gagarin". After passing under the railway bridge you find another rotatory and turn left taking "via Gobetti".
Follow the "CNR Area della Ricerca" sign and you'll be right here!
- From Verona and Austria From the "Autostrada del Brennero A22" (Brenner Autobahn) in Modena take the "Autostrada del Sole A1" direction Bologna-Firenze.
Then follow the above indications for Milano-Firenze.
- From Padova-Venezia From the "Autostrada A13" from Padova-Venezia exit at "Bologna-Arcoveggio".
Turn right taking the outer ring "Tangenziale" direction west. Go out at Exit No. 5 "Uscita Lame". Then follow the above indications for Milano-Firenze.
- From Ancona-Bari From the "Autostrada Adriatica A14" exit at "Bologna S.Lazzaro". Take the outer ring and go out at the Exit No. 5 "Uscita Lame". Then follow the above indications for Milano-Firenze.
