Air Quality Modelling

CHIMBO is an air quality modeling system based on the Chemical Transport Model CHIMERE and the meteorological model BOLAM.

Distribuzione Polveri Dust

The initial and boundary conditions for CHIMBO are derived from the global circulation model for the atmospheric composition distributed by ECMWF in the framework of CAMS (Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service) initiative.

CHIMBO calculates the concentrations of major atmospheric components (gas and aerosols) for the European (grid size of 0.25 degrees longitude and 0.18 degrees latitude) and Italian (grid size of 0.125 degrees longitude and 0.09 degrees latitude) domains in regular geographical coordinates, with 8 atmospheric levels whose thickness are given by: 0-25, 26-75, 76-180, 181-400, 401-800, 801-1800, 1801-3600, and 3601-5700 meters..

CHIMBO is executed daily starting at 00:00 UTC, for 72 hours in forecasts mode. The meteorological model is initialized on the GFS global analysis valid at 18:00 UTC.
